Greetings Otherkin,
With the holiday season finally over and my employment situation sorted out
(In the time since the last issue I've managed to get laid off and find
another job), we're back on track!
I'd like to thank everyone for being so patient :).

Several things have come to mind lately.
Mainly, I want to know if any of you have heard of a species called
ilni. They are like Sidhe or elves, but not so. This culture has no
nobles (they did, but many thousands of years ago); is very
technologically advanced, and expert in the genetic manipulation of
organisms. Some psychic abilities, but not many, and not distributed
equally. I have a feeling that this culture does not exist in one unit
any longer, and that there are a few currently on this world, incarnate
in their original forms, and not reborn as humans.
Another thing: has anyone met somebody in this life that they knew in a
past one, especially as Otherkin? I haven't posted the poem about my
"pale sister", who I believe was either my real sister or a fellow
novice priestess in one of my past lives. The "sister", in this life,
incarnated in one of my high school teachers, a male. (He has absolutely
no idea about this, and wouldn't believe it if I told him.) I was drawn
to him, but was wary of him at the same time.
Now, my responses to the last list:
A response to Lanthinel, who wrote:
>It seems obvious that Earth is to be a (I don't want to use the word
>"the") focal point for something on a multiversal scale. Why are all
>these fairly distinct elements of Fae in the multiverse coming

>talk about chances for the Fae to return to Earth with a "vengeance",
>or at least a second (third, fourth...) chance. Maybe we won't know

were all just really bored and decided to come here because it's
>supposed to get interesting (this one
>seems to appeal to me for some odd reason). It does seem extremely
>presumptuous folly on our part to think we're the only thread in the
>tapestry.
I get this feeling that all the Otherkin are here because our worlds
have been destroyed and there is nowhere else to go...I may be wrong,
having little Memories (especially if I am Otherkin or not, a very
important matter) or knowledge of others' Memories. As for me, I have a
great fear of things getting "interesting"-I'm not one for action and I
doubt that I would have chosen to incarnate on a world where Great
Events, especially of the Cataclysmic or World-Changing variety, would
occur during my lifetime. That is, of course, if I had any idea these
things were going to happen-which, again, I doubt.
Response to Shirley, who wrote:

Well, IMO, that's why we have many religions; it's the visions of
different facets of Deity. It's too mindboggling to try to envision the
mind of God for most of us.

It also helped to get a Christian point of
view that I could relate to completely without feeling threatened. (I am
Christian, but some people really do seem to thow "spiritual twinkies")
Viator, welcome to the list, and don't worry at all about "offering advice
out of nowhere"! I actually don't know what a purification ritual is and
would like to try one if you could describe it to me.

I am still fighting this sickness... I had already been trying to enjoy
the winter weather here (in Connecticut, BTW), and it does feel good. It's
strange... there are some times when I am happy and think I can feel God's
presence and the meaning of my life and the universe, but then my brain
takes over and starts asking questions.

I have to wonder, for example, why there should be any lack of faith if there
really is a God. Shouldn't we just *know* of his existence for certain? I
also
have a very deep fear of spirituality merely being some emotional need to
keep us
contented rather than an actual meaning and reality. (That's not expressed
very well,
but I hope you can still understand.) The thought of God as merely being an
invented idea nearly makes me panic!

I also have developed a significant fear of death, both my own and

Again, thank you so, so much. I believe that I
am slowly regaining bits of my old self and old beliefs (perhaps somewhat
modified) and I am hopeful that eventually I will be able to look back on
this situation with a greater understanding.

Subject: another non-human? (for list)
To: tiernan@mad.scientist.com
I have been thinking lately of a person I knew in grade school for two
years who terrified me and attracted me at the same time. I had a dream
(one of those dreams you know is not just a normal dream) that she was a
green glowing light inside a gas mask. She felt to me like she was
tearing a hole in space wherever she walked. There was some sort of void
in her that I can't explain, but there was something inside of it I
couldn't quite see but was not human. She did everything in a "perfect"
way, so perfect that she knew she couldn't -look- "perfect" in most
people's eyes but she was perfectly imperfect. Just the right amount of
every human quality to make her look not only acceptably human, but most
people liked her. I got the distinct impression that she was -not-
human. At the time I thought maybe some sort of robot-body controlled by
something sinister. She was the only person at that school who offered
to be "friends" with me, and I accepted, giving her licence to manipulate
me like she did most people. But most people didn't notice the
manipulation while I noticed and allowed it. This would all seem like
just my childish pre-schizophrenic imagination to me, only one day she
told me that I wasn't human. Eventually I decided I wanted nothing to do
with her. Almost immediately after making this decision I discovered my
own true elven nature. I think maybe she was put there to test if I was
ready to know about what I really was. Images of her have been coming
back about monthly for years, but I never allowed myself to think about
them too long. Until last Saturday, when I was up late and my defences
were down. I thought and talked for a long time, and I wound up more
than frightened. I think that she may not know what she is, and I think
that if she found out she could do a lot of damage to this world.
Problem is, -I- don't know what she is. I know that when I hear the
right word I will know. Does any of this sound like any sort of being
any of you have encountered? ANY sort of being. My therapist, by the
way, thinks I'm "paranoid".

<snipped exceptionally diplomatic introduction>
Specifically, I am writing in response to the many contributions of the
Silver Elves. While I recognize the value of their contributions, the
importance of the ideals they represent, and the beauty of their person, I
cannot support the presumptiveness and even the arrogance of their
self-appointed position as representatives of all that is Elfin. I
personally find the presumptiveness of the Silver Elves highly offensive.

Greyhawk, you know already that I subscribe to the same sort
of philosophy you do (of the underlying Oneness of all etc)
... yet there are ways and ways again to interpret the
SilverElves' posts. They do seem to concentrate strongly on
light and loftiness ... and yet, is it not true that often
those things people concentrate most on, are the elements
about which they have the gravest doubts?
What I mean is ... we can only become annoyed or upset by
the SilverElves' posts if we assume them to be "further down
the path", or "more advanced" or "wiser" than any of the
rest of us. Of course, they are none of these things ...
they are just other people, with opinions, as are we all.
They are entitled to express them, as are we all ... and it
is then incumbent upon us to decide whether or not those
opinions are relevant to our realities or not.
Greyhawk then continued...

Indeed, this is always so.
__
Lanthinel talked about the place of Fae on this earth, with
relevance to the Dreaming, to forming communities, and to
heritage and self-identity as a race.
A personal arrow from my quiver for a second ... Whilst I
believe it would well behoove the Elven community to be a
little more open and accepting of Other Other - I am not
suggesting that Elves accept Other Other, or even
"non-mundane" Humans, simply because they are also
"outcasts" from the mainstream social structure on this
world.
No ... what I mean here is not a tight, clinging affiliation
out of desperation or loneliness, but a gentler and more
accepting frame of mind generally. My experience of Elves
(and yah, if you're going to flame me for this ... breathe
deeply and read the rest first!), has been of a community of
very vital and *volatile* people. There is that
unmistakable spark of creativity there, but there is
(perhaps the flipside of the same coin), also a
predisposition to criticism, to gossip, to suspicion and
judgement and fear; and it seems to me to present itself in
far larger doses among the Elven community than it does even
in the Human one.
As much as "normal" or "mundane" Humans look at the Elves
from the corners of their suspicious eyes, and back away
muttering of madness and badness, so do many Elves often
regard anyone non-Elven (indeed the phenomenon can even be
observed between certain groups of Elves and other groups of
Elves!).
It is my feeling that the sense of disharmony I have picked
up from the Elves I know comes from something very simple:
this small community feels a need to define itself, and is
passing through that stage of self-awareness emerging, which
every individual passes through as they enter their teen
years. It is normal for any sentient and growing thing to
pass through a period of "lashing out"; and a period of
"lashing inwards" or of prodding its neighbours and testing
itself and them before it stabilises, and to my mind this
current activity (or more properly, the activity within the
last year) within the Elven community is not a bad thing.
It is indicative of development, of movement, both of which
are essential to the survival of any social group. At the
same time as I have watched Elves lash out at other Elves,
or at different folk altogether, I have also watched the
sheer effort put into *remaining a community* - however hard
that is - by most of the Elves I know. I admire this.
I suppose at core I am just suggesting that we don't hit the
SilverElves too hard on this one ... their point of view
comes from a more confident and established community than
many Elves (or Other) I know seem to inhabit, and perhaps it
is one which will develop naturally, given time. The
SilverElves have perhaps been guilty of presumption in
trying to teach anyone anything. People learn things when
they want to, it's best to let them be.
For the record I am not a "creature of light", nor truly a
"creature of darkness", so this POV is not skewed by any
particular leaning on my part. I have elements of both
darkness and light in me, and use them as appropriate.

Try to remember also, that it is natural for you to
vacillate between feeling upset and feeling in control of
things right now. Your feelings of confusion and pain are
natural - and when you can't avoid them, then appreciate
them for what they are, a natural upwelling of grief and
desire for knowledge which cannot be anything but healthy at
this time in your life, even though it feels pretty
wretched!
I guess it comes to this: Don't get stressed out about
being stressed out! It's OK to be stressed out. It's OK
to be confused or to grieve.

The answer I found for myself is lies in the definition of Faith that I
learned during my own soul-searching. Faith is believing in something when
you _have no tangible proof_. To come to my own Faith in God/dess, whom I
call Ea, I had to settle for myself the question of whether Sie exists and
is listening, Sie cares, without direct proof. Now that I know how to
Listen, I can Hear Ea's voice, wisdom and guidance. However, if I wasn't
listening, I wouldn't hear. That is how people can be unaware of God/dess'
presence.

It sounds like you are questioning your beliefs that you may have once
taken for granted, or not thought through. This is quite healthy :) When
you have done your soul-searching, you may come to insights and faith that
are stronger and more spiritually nurturing than what you had before. I
agree with the advice that you shouldn't try too hard. My advice would be
to just sit down and listen to your inner voice. Get quiet and listen for
the voice of God/dess. Those who seek Hir with an open heart and earnest
yearning will find Hir.

I was also given a Sidhe knot by a friend of mine. It also seems to me that
the description is partially true, but just a bit off. I've almost given up
on trying to sort through the human descriptions of the Fae, Tuatha de
Dannan and Sidhe that have come down through the years. They've gotten so
mixed up :( Without going into too much detail in this description, my
opinion is that I'd check with someone who knows Gaelic as to whether a
barrow is called a Sidhe. (I think there's a bit more explanation that came
with my Sidhe Knot, that the name for the Sidhe is longer, and that it got
shortened to Sidhe, which means mound). It wouldn't surprise me if Sidhe
was actually part of a longer name originally.
I think that the perception that the Tuatha de Dannan went into the mounds
was based on the entrances to the Otherworld being in these mounds. If so,
the Tuatha de Dannan didn't actually live in the hills, the hills were just
entranceways to the lands beyond. People seeing someone enter the
Otherworld would have just seen the person enter a hill, and so may have
thought the person lived in the hill itself.
I do get the feeling that the knot does actually honor the Fae, I'm not
sure about it honoring the Tuatha de Dannan specifically.

Subject: SOUL MATES*MAGICAL ELVEN LOVE LETTERS
>From the very first moment that we call out to our elfin kin....
Tolain Eldivasli (devoted kinlings),
....our elfin soul hears us and stirs and our elven kindred,
particularly our Der Ernili (soul mates) begin to gravitate toward us,
as we are, for our own part, inclined toward them. Every effort that we
make toward the realization of our elfin nature strengthens the bond
between us and our elfin soul that has thus far been in a deep state of
trance-meditation on the ethereal and buddhic planes of existence.
Every elfin thought, deed, feeling and particularly service to our
people draws this soul more fully within us until that day comes when
the soul is wholly indwelling and merged with our body, mind and
emotions.
This is, of course, a great paradox. How is it possible that we
can be elves and yet not be awakened to our elfiness, or how can we be
awakened and yet not fully the elves we know ours'elves to be? How is
it possible that there can be a more fully awakened part of us, which we
call the soul, that exists on another plane yet is both us and not us?
The answer to this is what, to some, might be considered Time
Travel. Our elfin soul exists within us now, in potential, and exists
in the future in its more awakened form in actuality. Just as the
"adult", the teenager and the child exist in potential within the baby,
so does our elfsoul live within us. Just as the teenager is almost
totally different from the baby...it is mentally, emotionally and
physically transformed and yet is the same person, so too are we baby
elves now and will one day be more truly elfin later. We call this
process evolution and we are evolving into our more perfected, thus
immortal, s'elves.
Now the fact that our elfin soul descends into our being sounds a
good deal like becoming possessed...which it is! However, this is S'ELF
possession...it is the influx of our very own soul...our true ego
dispossessing all the cult-ural gibberish and programing that we have
been en-cult-urated with since our infancy. To become an elf is to
become more and more in control of our own brain, body and feelings. It
is to become the director and programer of our own consciousness. For
ultimately, as we have said so many times, the elfland that we live in
is the elfland we create. It has never been our intention to tell
anyone how to be elfin, but rather to urge and where possible assist
each elf to find their own true s'elf; however, they might define it.
And it is our experience that the nature of elfland is such that long
contact eventually leads one to evolve into whomever they truly are...be
they elf, or hobbit or dwarf or whatever.
We know that there are those who struggle, as do we, with the often
harsh nature of the material world. We feel their pain and we do
everything within our power to send them the healing energy that they
need to rise above the difficult circumstances of their lives and their
past (karma) and we have faith that they in their turn are doing the
same for us. We are not oblivious to suffering, we feel very deeply for
every tortured soul but we have learned...and this has not always been
the easiiest lesson for us, that being maudlin and depressed over the
difficulties of existence merely sinks us deeper into the mire and that
a determinedly optimistic, focused and intent inner cheerfulness is the
best means of approaching and overcoming the various obstacles and
sometimes tragedies that can confront us on this most physical of
planes. It is not always easy to be joyful, it takes tremendous spirit,
courage and serious determination but it is, we have found, the best and
healthiest way to avoid many of the depressions and torments that
confound so many. It must be remembered that we are developing the
powers of our minds and feelings (our thought emotes) to create our
Elfland...and this is truly elfin magic.
But it is seldom easy to go this road alone....elves alone are most
often like boats adrift. In fact, the first thing that usually happens
when an elf awakens is an incredible longing for one's
kindred...particularly for one's Der Ernili (soul mates). These elves
do not define soul mates in the way that most people do... what most
would think of as a soul mate we call Ruthned (Weldlinque)...that is an
intimate romantic bond with another person. What we mean by soul mates
are those individuals that are part of one's Ela Vyl (Life Wave)...they
are the elves that one is most intune with spiritually and who have
incarnated at the same time in order to fulfill a particular bit of
service or dharma for our people or for humanity or nature at large.
>From the very instant that one awakens, sometimes sooner, our Der Ernili
begin to feel us stirring and engage a psychic sense we have, Dershun,
that helps us to find each other. It is not instantaneous, in fact, it
often takes a good deal of time for us to find our Der Ernili but this
time can be well spent in becoming ever more intune with our inner being
and the more tuned in we become with our own elfin nature the stronger
the attraction that draws our soul mates to us.
In the meantime, we have found it wise to do our best with whomever
fate sends us...whoever is sincerely willing to put forth the effort and
to journey with us for however long or far on this voyage of discovery
and awakening of ours'elves and the creation of elfland. And in this
way we wear down the rough edges, we cut away the dross, we rid
ours'elves of every thing...every thought, habit, feeling, action that
stands between us and the fulfillment of our destiny to live forever
with our friends and lovers, sisters and brothers in the shimmering glow
of elfland here among the stars.
What would you do to find your true loves...? What would you
endure? How long would you be willing to work and wait? How much are
you willing to give up...to change and transform so that your dreams
will come true? This is a question that each of us must ask and face.
Those who think that Elfland will suddenly appear for them and magically
everything will be all right... or that their elfin mates will come
along and their work and worries are over...are, in our opinion, very
much mistaken...elfland must be created and it is we who must make it
real. The appearance of our Der Ernili is not the end of our quest, but
truly the beginning. So smile, dearest kindred, rejoice...we are
warriors of love and healing and we volunteered for this
mission....remember?
kyela and des'tai,
the SILVER ELVES

Subject: festival announcement
"Be not where, but only when, thee Faerie Folke do gather once again.."
Walking the Threshholds is the first-ever festival
specifically for
elven, fae, and Otherkin peoples - those who 'just aren't human'. We welcome
all who feel this description fits (or just appeals in some curious sense)
to join
us for a gathering in Pennsylvania. While those from the gaming and pagan
communities are welcome, this is definitely not a neo-pagan nor a gaming
convention and should not be confused with same.
Walking the Threshholds is scheduled for June 18 - 21,
1998, at Four
Quarters Farm in Artemis PA (near the Maryland border). The cost is $45.00
before April 1,1998; $50.00 by May 1st; $55.00 at the gate. Kids 12-16 are
$20 pre-reg
or at the gate; under 12 free. Vendors fee is an additional $15.00.
(Registration checks
should be made out to Geoffrey Wendel).
We are currently accepting workshop proposals for the
fest. Workshops
should either be about an aspect of otherkin life (here and Elsewhere) or
bear a demonstrable link to fae/elven/Other majik or ways of being. To help
our
schedule run smoothly, workshops should fit into a one-hour slot (a double
slot may be
considered, however space is limited).
We are particularly interested in suggestions of or
proposals from
bands/musicians/entertainers who identify as or 'speak to' the Fae folke.
>*all genres will be considered*<.. We would LOVE to be able to book an
elven goth group, an all-dragon thrash band, a faery string quartet and a
couple leprechauns with a bodhran and tin whistle! Deadline for all
proposals is Candlemas, Feb 1, 1998. Email proposals to either
wufkitn@en.com or
rialian@his.com, or send them to the P.O.Box listed below:
Walking the Thresholds

*****
Greetings, all!
I need a bit of help from the good folk of this ML. Quite some time ago I
brought up the problem that when people get into discussions about Otherkin
stuff, they often aren't using the same terms, or when they do, they don't
associate the same meanings with those terms. This has, in the past, led to
unfortunate disputes and even (dare I say it?) flame wars. We need a common
"earth" vocabulary to share - something that is pretty much agreed upon by
everyone living here on earth, with as little vagueness as possible. We also
need this for the benefit of newly Awakening Otherkin, who haven't had the
benefit of hearing our long discussions and will probably be confused when
they come in "during the second reel". Since I'm not aware of anyone else
having done so, I am trying to put together a glossary of common terms that
we've agreed upon. However, my memory isn't the best, so I'm certain I'm
missing some things from this list. I would appreciate it if people could
read over what I've got and tell me if I've got something wrong, or if
there's something else I should include. Once I've got a list that seems
reasonably accurate, I will post it on my webpage and update it when
necessary.
Anyway, here's what there is so far:
Awaken
The process of realizing that you have memories of being a member of a
non-human race. This is usually a gradual process, with memories usually
coming slowly, in bits and pieces. Memories are most often attached to
feelings, so for those of you going through this, remember that the heart
remembers what the mind does not.
Otherkin
A general term referring to all non-human races
Sidhe
A term describing a tall, fair, magickally adept race of people. 'Sidhe' are
sometimes specifically thought of as being native to Tir Nan Oc, but the
term is sometimes used interchangeably with the term 'elf'.
Elf
A term describing a tall, fair, magickally adept race of people. 'Elves' are
sometimes specifically thought of as being native to Aelfheim, but the term
is sometimes used interchangeably with the term 'sidhe'.
Brinn
A felinoid race. Their home realm has not yet been determined.
Tir Nan Oc
One of the sidhe home realms. Most memories of the Tir tend to be associated
with a warm climate and plenty of vegetation.
Aelfheim
Another sidhe home realm. Memories of Aelfheim seem to include some
mountainous territories, as well as a climate that permits snow.
The Sundering
Some people have memories of an ancient time when sidhe were more unified.
The Sundering refers to the period of time during which that unity was
broken up and the sidhe went to different realms. Some people also associate
this with the beginnings of the Seelie and Unseelie.
The Darkness
There has been discussion of a force that wants to destroy reality as we
know it. Some have called this 'darkness' or 'chaos'. Personally, from the
gist of the conversations I heard, I think 'the Nothing' might be a better
word to use to describe this. 'Darkness' and 'chaos' are both words that
might be misconstrued by those who prefer the yin side of life, (yin/yang,
dark/light, female/male, chaos/order. etc.), and yin does not seem to
describe this force. 'Nothing' seems to me to describe it better, as in "The
Nothing" in "The NeverEnding Story". Some attribute intelligence to this
malevolence, others believe it is a force that originates within ourselves.
Des'tai, Deshtai
The Way, the Path, the Tao, the Way Things Are Supposed to Be...among other
things. (Note - I'm planning a whole page to devote to the concept of
des'tai, so I'm going to put a link to it from this short definition)
Glamour
A term that has been borrowed from the White Wolf universe. It describes the
flow of magickal, creative energy.
Please help me out here. By expending just a little effort now, we could
avoid dialogue problems in the future.
Thanks!
BTW, just a random thought here...but has anyone ever thought about how much
advantage there is to using the human realm as a place for diverse Otherkin
to meet? Humans all have the same basic form, so when everyone is forced to
wear a human form, you don't get people with big claws, fangs or sheer mass
trying to use them to intimidate other Otherkin. Just a thought...
Walk in peace,
Amanjaku
